Our design philosophy behind The Generalist was to create a bag that minimizes its own weight while maximizing interior carry capacity, giving you the freedom to carry more without feeling weighed down. Weighing in at only 2.2lbs and a total carry capacity of 35L, the bag is designed to be your perfect one bag travel companion.

Designed with efficiency in mind, the main compartment offers generous space to carry your daily essentials, travel gear, or outdoor equipment. A full clamshell opening makes packing easy and intuitive, while an additional interior pocket provides a secure spot for stashing slimmer items — perfect for a hydration bladder, tablet, or other flat gear you want to keep separate.
Our padded laptop sleeve has interior space of 11.5 x 17.5 inches allowing you to fit larger size laptops.
The Generalist’s exterior pockets are designed for simplicity and maximum utility. The large front pocket has enough space to carry items you need to grab on the go like a power bank, wallets or other neccessary items. Its covered by a breathable mesh pocket great for soft items like jackets, raincoats or hats without taking up interior space. Additionally the backpack has two mesh water bottle side pockets allowing you to carry tall or shorter sized water bottles.
Our 11 x 6 in quick access front pocket is great for flat items you need to grab quickly, like a passport wallet, map or notebook.
The Generalist features two top pockets for easy access and practical organization. The smaller flat pocket is perfect for stashing essentials like keys, passports, documents or wallets. The larger pocket is ideal for larger items like sunglasses, power banks or umbrellas.
Finch Gear was inspired by the adaptability of wild finches — birds that evolve to thrive in changing environments. Our gear follows that same principle: lightweight, versatile, and built to adapt to your journey.
But the birds that shaped our vision are increasingly under threat. That’s why we’re setting aside $5 from every Founders Edition Generalist Backpack to support bird conservation — from habitat restoration to biodiversity protection.
As we grow, we plan to expand these efforts through future product sales, always with transparency and purpose. We haven’t partnered with a specific organization just yet, but we’ll keep our community updated as funds are put to work.

What began as a hobby crafting functional ultralight camping bags and travel backpacks inspired us to build Finch Gear.
Born in Raleigh, North Carolina, we have put our combined 20 years of camping and travel experience into our product designs.
